“16 Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. 17 And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.” Colossians 3:16-17 (NLT)

Colin Smith leads worship with The Band Upstairs at Messiah’s vibrant Contemporary Service at 11:00 AM in McVay Fellowship Hall.

As the son of a church choir director, Colin was immersed in both worship and a wide variety of music from an early age. His first experience with contemporary worship music was at Sylvania First United Methodist church with his father, Jerry Smith, and singer-songwriter Kerry Patrick Clark.

Colin began leading worship at Collingwood Presbyterian Church in Toledo, Ohio in 2007. Under his direction, Collingwood’s band, Refuge, became a staple in the community including annual engagements at Toledo’s Old West End Festival. After moving to Columbus in 2012, Colin volunteered at Mifflin Presbyterian Church in Gahanna before joining Messiah’s staff as Worship Leader in early 2014.

Together with the wonderful team of volunteers that make up The Band Upstairs, Colin works with Messiah’s pastors to create an authentic and moving contemporary worship environment each week. The band has also led or participated in a number of outreach events including the Steps of Faith 5K and Westerville’s Fourth Friday.

Colin graduated from Sylvania Northview High School and earned Bachelor’s Degrees in Economics and Music from Bowling Green State University. He now lives in Galloway with his wife, Jerrica, and two dogs, Sweet Pea and Willow. In addition to his passions for music and his family, Colin is an avid history and trivia buff and an aspiring gardener.
