Meet Steve Putka

What I do at Messiah:
I’m serving as Pastor of Care & Mission. In this role, I provide primary pastoral counseling and support for members and friends of the congregation. It’s also my privilege to support members of the church who also feel called by God to reach out and show God’s care and love through prayer, visitation, and other community-building interaction. I also help to coordinate mission outreach and service to God’s people through Church of the Messiah.
My God Story:

I began my life as a Roman Catholic, but beginning in college I spent 10 years away from the church, confused and discouraged with organized religion. During this time I felt God calling me back to Christian community, but I resisted. Close friends cared enough to invite my wife and me to their church. We became United Methodists and several years later we moved with our three children back to Ohio for seminary. I later served for 10 years helping children and staff from many religious traditions at the United Methodist Children’s Home before God led me to serve at Church of the Messiah.

My Education:

BS, Biological Sciences, University of Cincinnati, 1988

Master of Arts, Counseling & Student Development (Administration Emphasis), Appalachian State University, 1992

Master of Divinity (Spirituality Specialization), Methodist Theological School in Ohio, 1999

My Family:
Wendy and I have been married for 20 years. Wendy is a United Methodist Deaconess, and serves mentally ill and disabled persons at a Columbus-area non-profit organization. Our older son, Chad, is a student at Oberlin College and studies music. Our younger children, Grace and Sam, attend Thomas Worthington High School.
My Hobbies:
I enjoy reading, fishing and gardening. When I find time, I also enjoy travel, rafting, hiking and hunting.
